Unicode

We have switched from Latin-3 to UTF-8

The first story to appear on this site had been initially composed on a Commodore Amiga 2000 computer in the word processor Excellence! with the intent of going to print as a pamphlet. I myself had created the Type 1 PostScript fonts in Latin-3 with SaxonScript, again on the Amiga 2000.

It was just about then that Commodore went down the tubes, taking the Amiga with them. Resignedly, I next re-formatted Three-legged Joe with WordPerfect 8 on a Gateway 5150 laptop running Windows 98, yet again in ISO-Latin-3 encoding. It was no small ammount of work. And none of these methods were very well suited to tranformation. On top of it all, my switch from the AmigaOS to MS Windows proved far from a happy experience. Everything has changed since then. Now I spend most of my programming time on NetBSD, a flavor of Unix.

Initially I had licensed Bitstream’s proprietary technology Dynamic Web Fonts for this site. Although none too cheap, it did seem, at the time, an up-and-coming technology. But wide-spread support never did emerge. And only MSIE ever implemented Bitstream even though Netscape had indicated originally that they might. Luckily though, Unicode UTF-8 is working out better by far than Dynamic Web Fonts could ever have hoped to do. For one thing, UTF-8 does not require a server, being embeded in nearly every modern browser.

For us the switch is now fully accomplised. And with it we also now enjoy a new URL esperanto.us on a new ISP with 300MB and Perl/CGI. Thanks are owed to Jordi Mas Trullenque who prodded me into writing a Perl script to fix a broken page he had linked to and who also gave valued assistance on numerous subtle technical matters to do with this web site. Thanks also to Bertilo for his Unicode resources on the web. Please know that in the future these are the browsers I will try to support:

The above, in order, are the ones which I use most. Their latest versions all include built-in support for Unicode UTF-8, and by extension Esperanto. Thus to view this site, you will do best to employ one of those. Otherwise your browser may continue to give difficulties.

Thank you,
